One night of Jake Gyllenhaal just isn’t enough.
That’s the conclusion reached by the artistic team at City Center, which sold out tickets to a one-night concert performance of “Sunday in the Park with George,” starring Mr. Gyllenhaal, so rapidly that it has decided to add two more performances.
And that’s not all. City Center said Thursday that it had chosen Annaleigh Ashford, a Tony-winning comedic actress, to star opposite Mr. Gyllenhaal, known for his film roles. He will play the French painter Georges Seurat; she will play his slighted lover, Dot.
The event, combining two much-admired performers with a much-loved American musical, is a fund-raiser for the nonprofit performing arts organization.
Announcing the event in May, City Center said it would take place on Oct. 24, with a combination of performance-only tickets (now sold out) and tickets for a performance plus a benefit dinner (still available). The added performances will take place on Oct. 25 and 26; tickets, priced at $75 and above, are to go on sale Monday for City Center members and on Wednesday for the general public.
“Sunday in the Park with George,” inspired by Seurat’s painting “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte,” features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It opened on Broadway in 1984 and won the Pulitzer Prize for drama the following year.
