Ambassador Theatre Group has announced that a revival of Sunday in the Park With George, starring Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Constellations) and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford (You Can’t Take It With You), will reopen the historic Hudson Theatre on Broadway this winter for a strictly limited 10-week engagement.
Performances are set to begin February 11, 2017, ahead of a Thursday, February 23 opening, and will play through April 23. The Broadway mounting follows the October concert performances at New York City Center, starring Gyllenhaal as Georges Seurat and Ashford as Dot.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, the revival of Sunday in the Park With George will be directed by Sarna Lapine. The musical follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
Consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.
“We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming audiences back to the historic Hudson Theater for the first time in almost 50 years with this musical classic,” said Mark Cornell, Ambassador Theatre Group’s Chief Executive Officer. “Direct from its acclaimed New York City Center production, Sondheim and Lapine’s masterpiece Sunday in the Park With George, starring Jake and Annaleigh, is the perfect inaugural offering for this Broadway treasure box. To be reopening our most intimate of New York venues with this special work makes me excited about the future of the Hudson.”
In addition to Gyllenhaal and Ashford, the City Center cast also included Brooks Ashmanskas (Shuffle Along), Phillip Boykin (On the Town), Max Chernin (Bright Star), Carmen Cusack (Bright Star), Gabriel Ebert (Thérèse Raquin), Claybourne Elder (Bonnie and Clyde), Lisa Howard (It Shoulda Been You), Zachary Levi (She Loves Me), Liz McCartney (Annie), Michael McElroy (Disaster!), Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I), Stephanie Jae Park (The King and I), Gabriella Pizzolo (Fun Home), Phylicia Rashad (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Lauren Worsham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder), Jaime Rosenstein (Wicked tour), and Solea Pfeiffer.
Sunday in the Park With George is produced on Broadway by Adam Speers for Ambassador Theatre Group, New York City Center, Jeanine Tesori, and Riva Marker.
Additional casting will be announced shortly.

I did almost miss the news about Jake returning to broadway with “Sunday In The Park With George”, but found your posting and thankfully found it on time! I was lucky to get a good ticket for Feb 11th.
This is going to be my first trip to the U.S. and a dream come true with going to see THIS show on broadway with Jake. I fell in love with his singing voice and the emotions he manages to transport with it so I was hoping to see him on stage in a musical one day. I have listened to a recording of this show and loved it!
To me it isn´t all about the technically perfect singing, it´s more about the message coming through and the emotions being delivered right to your heart and Jake is sooo good at that!
Thank you so much for this site, it´s hard to find information about Jake that isn´t full of gossip and rumours etc! His private life is non of my business and if I could filter all this crap when searching for news I would!
I am not posting much but had to do this now… thank you again and I hope this site will be up for a loooong time to come!
