Jake Gyllenhaal gets physical in the new fantasy-adventure film Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, writes AREF OMAR

IN the trailer of the upcoming film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a muscular Jake Gyllenhaal is seen doing amazing moves in exciting action sequences.

One has him scaling a high castle wall by pulling himself up using arrows half-buried in the wall that had been shot at the castle by a comrade.

“I look pretty cool doing that,” says the soft-spoken Californian actor when interviewed in Santa Monica.

“But what you don’t know is the behind-the-scenes goofs. My arm and shoulder muscles were so big that the chest plate I wore prevented me from reaching up to grab the arrows,” he says.

“There were many funny takes of me doing that and in the end, they literally had to cut wider arm holes in the chest plate,” he says with a laugh.

Known for his brooding character in Donnie Darko, his role in Brokeback Mountain as well as for his recent film, Brothers with Tobey McGuire, Prince Of Persia sees Gyllenhaal venturing into new territory as an action hero.

Produced by action guru Jerry Bruckheimer, of Pirates Of The Caribbean fame, Gyllenhaal in Prince Of Persia grows a manly mane and bulks up to play the dashing rogue prince Dastan.

Set in the mystical land of sixth-century Persia, he reluctantly teams up with the mysterious Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to prevent an ancient dagger from falling into the hands of evil nobleman Nizam (Ben Kingsley).

The dagger contains the Sands of Time, which can reverse time and allows its possessor to rule the world.

“I’ve always loved watching action-adventure films and dreamt of being one of those characters as a kid. You know, like Indiana Jones and the cool, swashbuckling Errol Flynn flicks,” he says.

“When I read Prince, I saw a clear role for me. This guy is wry, gets to do lots of fun stuff and best of all, is ‘bad’ and funny,” says the 29-year-old actor, who was once considered for the roles of Spiderman and Batman.

Gyllenhaal now has his own action figure line.

“Yeah, it’s crazy,” he says, with a laugh.

“It’s interesting to note that although the film is inspired by the popular video game of the 1980s, the platform game itself was inspired by action films like Raiders Of The Lost Ark.”
Looking casual in a pair of black jeans, sneakers and a Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop T-shirt, the six-footer looks fit as a fiddle.

“I’m a physical person by nature, I love being active,” says Gyllenhaal, who is an avid cyclist and kung fu exponent.

For the film he learned parkour, which sees the environment as a jungle gym obstacle course. It was founded by David Belle.

“The role was incredibly acrobatic,” says Gyllenhaal.

Director Mike Newell, whose credits include Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings And A Funeral, wanted the action scenes to be epic yet believable.

“There is a scene where my character runs along a wall, which seems impossible, but Belle made it happen. It’s one of my favourite scenes from the film,” says Gyllenhaal of the film which was shot in Morocco and at Pinewood Studios in Britain.

He says he does many of the stunts himself, including a 10.6-metre jump with wire work.
“I wanted to do everything,” he says.

“Why sign up for a film like this if you’re not game for some real action?”

Note: Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time opens on May 28.

Jake Gyllenhaal Defends Heath in Bar Dustup
23 March, 2010 Author: Catagories: News & Headlines, Source Code

Did Jake Gyllenhaal roughhouse with a woman this weekend?

No, we don’t mean in the fun way, babes. There’s a report going around that the Prince of Persia star got into a little altercation up in Montreal over the weekend.

And we’re here to sort things out for you…

The alleged incident supposedly went down Saturday night at restaurant Garde-Manger.

Apparently Gyllenhaal was dancing on the bench of his table with a group of pals, ticking off a blogger from DrunkenStepfather a few feet away who found the show to be quite egocentric.

Said blogger then went up to Jake’s table, turned to a girl there and goes (according the blogger himself):  “Hey isn’t that the guy who kissed Heath Ledger?”

Gyllenhaal apparently got in the guys face, told him to f–ck off and got the dude escorted out of the club. Only problem is in this he-said, he-said tale is that the blogger also claims his female guest was pushed about 10 times by Gyllenhaal before J.G.’s crew pulled him away.

Gyllenhaal’s rep claims blogger’s story is “libelous” and informs us his lawyers are taking “immediate action.”

And for more info on what really went down, here’s what we’ve learned:

Jake was definitely at the restaurant Saturday night (he’s a regular there) as was the blogger. Main discrepancy here? We’re told by sources who were present that the blogger in question said, “Hey isn’t that the guy who killed Heath Ledger?” prompting Jake to yell to the bouncers “get these guys out of my face.”

The instigator and his crew were then thrown out.

We originally read this blog post yesterday, where the site definitely had “killed” not “kissed” up until it was later changed. The post actually backs up this supposed kill claim by ranting in the item that if Jake was Ledger’s friend, he probably would have been there for him in his low point.

Seriously can’t say we blame Gyllenhaal’s heated reaction. “Isn’t that the guy who killed Heath Ledger?” Not a funny joke, dude. We wish punches were thrown.

As for this girl who was supposedly caught in the crossfire? Onlookers tell us “there were a bunch of girls” there but “no one was shoved or hurt.”

Jake is currently in Montreal filming Source Code, which won’t be affected by this nonincident. We hear filming has been going “great” up there before this.

Jake Gyllenhaal Ready To Be Fat And Happy
22 March, 2010 Author: Catagories: News & Headlines, Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t expect his current toned physique to last long, but insists he will be ”fat and happy”.

Jake Gyllenhaal expects to get fat soon.

The actor has stunned fans with his toned physique after working out in preparation for his role in ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ – but has warned his supporters that his new shape won’t last long because it was so difficult to achieve.

He said: “I probably put on five pounds of muscle which wasn’t easy. It might look good in the movie but it’s probably going to turn to fat before long.

“I’m going to be fat but I’m going to be happy.”

Jake, 29, recently revealed he is excited about seeing action figure replicas of himself, which will be released around the same time as the action adventure movie.

He said: “A lot of people find it weird to have little action figures of themselves, but I think it’s great.

“In fact it’s awesome! I can’t wait. I’m going to buy loads.”
