While promoting ‘End of Watch’ at TIFF, Jake spoke with Moviefone about the intense training he went through for the role, missing out on two enormous superhero francises and his 2007 David Fincher movie, ‘Zodiac’.

I feel like we’ve never seen a cop movie from this perspective before — that first person point-of-view.

I think the point of the movie was where the audience can go on a ride-along with two cops, where you got to know them as human beings and really get inside what it feels like to be a police officer. That’s what I think makes it original. And the relationship and the heart between these two guys is everything.

Were you the one holding the camera during the point-of-view scenes?

Yeah, I shot every day.

Opening in theaters this month, End of Watch is a gritty Los Angeles set crime drama that centers on two street cops who find themselves in over their heads after a notorious cartel takes issue with a bust and the confiscation of a cache of money and guns. Written and directed by David Ayer (Street Kings), the cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera and Frank Grillo.

Gyllenhaal was in Toronto last weekend to support its screening at TIFF but had to hurry back to Manhattan where he’s in previews with his off-Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s new dark comedy If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet. Directed by Michael Longhurst, the Roundabout Theatre Company production also stars Annie Funke, Michelle Gomez and Brian F. O’Byrne and is slated to run through November. We sat down with Gyllenhaal, who took a moment to talk about his excitement over the play.

When Jake Gyllenhaal signed on to play a brash, ambitious young cop in David Ayer’s End of Watch, he took his training to the extreme.

The 31-year-old actor beefed up and shaved his head, military-style, to play Officer Taylor, who patrols the meanest, most gang-addled streets of south central Los Angeles alongside his partner, Officer Zavala, played by Michael Pena. The two, who are also best friends, run into trouble when they see something they shouldn’t.

“I spent five months on the streets with, like, three sets of police officers from the sheriff’s department and from the LAPD for five months, three nights a week, from like 4 in the afternoon til 4 in the morning,” Gyllenhall said at THR’s special screening of the film at Goose Creek in East Hampton, N.Y.
