For Variety’s latest issue, they asked Jake Gyllenhaal to write a tribute to Ryan Reynolds, one of 50 people to make their New Power of New York list. Here’s why Reynolds, the star of “Deadpool,” represents a new generation of movers and shakers that capture the best of Manhattan.

I first met Ryan many years ago, and he struck me immediately as quick and warm and thoughtful, a gentleman in an era of foppish putzes, the unlikely love child of Mel Brooks and Dorothy Parker and Gary Cooper. He was also taller than me. Against my wishes, we became close friends.

Audiences got to know Ryan a bit through his work in a string of romantic comedies. He was undoubtedly charming and handsome (annoying), but he never quite had the space to fire on all cylinders. […]

‘Wildlife’ & ‘The Sisters Brothers’ To Premiere At TIFF

It has been announced that Jake’s upcoming films ‘Wildlife’ and ‘The Sisters Brothers’ will premiere at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival this September.

‘Wildlife’ follows a teenage boy (Ed Oxenbould) in 1960s Montana who experiences the breakdown of his parents’ marriage and his mother’s (Carey Mulligan) struggle to keep their lives afloat after his father (Jake Gyllenhaal) leaves.

‘The Sisters Brothers’ is an adaptation of Patrick deWitt’s award-winning western novel about the picaresque adventures of two brothers sent to kill a prospector accused of stealing from a tyrannical crime boss.

The 2018 Toronto Film Festival runs September 6th-16th. Full schedule to be announced August 21st.

Jake Set To Make Public Theater Debut In ‘Sea Wall / A Life’

Off-Broadway’s Public Theater has announced a talent-packed lineup for its 2018-2019 season. Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge will make their Public Theater debut in an unforgettable and incredibly intimate evening of theater.

Sturridge, in his third collaboration with Simon Stephens, performs Sea Wall, an astonishing monologue about love and the human need to know the unknowable.

Gyllenhaal continues his artistic collaboration with playwright Nick Payne (Constellations, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet) in A Life, a meditation on how we say goodbye to those we love most.

Sea Wall / A Life runs January 26, 2018 through March 24, 2019 at the Newman Theater in NYC.

Jake In Talks To Star In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Sequel

Jake Gyllenhaal is ready to bring a little mystery to the Spider-Man universe.

The actor is in talks to play the classic Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced Mysterio in the comics in 1964. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

Tom Holland starred as the Marvel hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming and recently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War. Jon Watts is returning to direct the sequel to Homecoming, which earned $880 million worldwide. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, two of the screenwriters behind the first movie, are back as well.
