Jake Gyllenhaal is ready for his next stage role, just as Broadway is ready for a brand new theater. The actor will star in the first-ever Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson’s acclaimed play, Burn This, producers Stacey Mindich and Jessica R. Jenen have announced.

Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, American Idiot) will direct the revival, thirty years after the play first premiered.

Performances are set to begin in February, ahead of its opening night on March 6. Set in downtown New York in the gritty 1980s, the complex, humorous play explores the spiritual and emotional isolation of Pale and Anna, two iconoclasts who are brought together in the wake of a life-changing event.

And that’s not all. City Center said Thursday that it had chosen Annaleigh Ashford, a Tony-winning comedic actress, to star opposite Mr. Gyllenhaal, known for his film roles. He will play the French painter Georges Seurat; she will play his slighted lover, Dot.

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In ‘Sunday in the Park with George’
24 May, 2016 Author: Catagories: News & Headlines, Sunday In The Park With George

Jake Gyllenhaal has agreed to star in a one-night-only performance of “Sunday in the Park With George” to raise money for New York City Center.

Mr. Gyllenhaal, although best known as a film star, wowed musical theater fans last summer with his star turn in an Encores! Off-Center production of “Little Shop of Horrors” at City Center. And “Sunday in the Park,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, is one of the most beloved shows in musical theater. The show, a look at the artistic and romantic compromises faced by the painter Georges Seurat, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985.

The concert performance is being produced by Jeanine Tesori, the Tony-winning composer of “Fun Home,”.

The gala, honoring the philanthropist Adrienne Arsht, is scheduled for October 24; performance-only tickets will be sold for $75 beginning at noon on May 25 at nycitycenter.org.
