Jake & Denis Push Each Other Into New Territory For ‘Enemy’
Two striking films are hitting the fall film festival circuit in a matter of days: “Prisoners,” an emotionally bruising crime thriller about family, loss and sin, and “Enemy,” an adaptation of José Saramago’s novel, “The Double,” which is an enigmatic psychological drama about identity, the subconscious and the male ego. The connection? Other than both films’ dark, disturbing tone, they represent the work of two collaborators—French Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhaal—who, as occasionally happens with director/actor pairings, seem to have unlocked something exceptional while in each other’s company.

‘Enemy’ & ‘Prisoners’ To Premiere At TIFF
Another title just added to the 2013 Toronto Film Festival is Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy based on “The Double” by Nobel Laureate José Saramago.
Enemy explores the troubled psyche of a man who is torn between his mistress and his wife and as the picture above shoes, Gyllenhaal plays dual roles in this one, both Adam and Anthony — a man and his double. Mélanie Laurent, Isabella Rossellini, Sarah Gadon, Stephen R. Hart and Jane Moffat co-star.
This is the second film for Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal in the festival as the thriller Prisoners will also be premiering at the fest, which is already set for a Sept 20 release and co-stars Hugh Jackman.

AN ENEMY is a mysterious thriller played out in the subconscious of a man in emotional crisis. Gyllenhaal plays Adam, a teacher, living with his girlfriend Mary. He discovers a physically identical man, an actor called Anthony, living nearby with his wife, Helen. But are Adam and Anthony two men? Or does one only exist in the imagination of the other?
