Audible will release its original audio production of the hit Broadway double-bill ‘Sea Wall / A Life’, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge, on April 30th. Both plays (also seen Off-Broadway) explore the joys and pain of both love and loss as the men recall past events involving those they love.
Jake Gyllenhaal said it was the “alchemy” he has with his co-star that drew him back to the West End for the first time in 18 years.
The Oscar nominee, who celebrates his 39th birthday on Thursday, last trod the boards in the UK in 2002 in Kenneth Lonergan’s play This Is Our Youth.
He will star opposite Annaleigh Ashford as the French post-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat in Sunday In The Park With George, which follows the painter as he completes his most famous work, A Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte.
Gyllenhaal first appeared in the musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine at New York’s City Centre in 2016, before transferring to the Hudson Theatre on Broadway in 2017.
Speaking to Standard Online ahead of Sunday In The Park with George’s West End transfer, Jake Gyllenhaal said that his previous stint in London “changed the whole process of [his] work” and praised the capital’s “supportive” theatre community.
“I had no idea what I was getting into, which was a wonderful thing,” he said. “Naively – I obviously knew the history of London theatre – I jumped into it just as a fool, which I think is sometimes the best way to do it.
“What I found when I performed here 18 years ago was this incredible, supportive community of artists. “You really earn your place [here], you work hard to make sure that you can grace the stage here.”
Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford sang a selection of songs from ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ on Tuesday during a special event at the National Gallery in London, accompanied by composer and producer Jeanine Tesori, playing a grand piano. Tickets for the West End run of ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ are on sale now. The show runs from June 11th through September 5th, 2020 at the Savoy Theatre.
