Stories about Jake Gyllenhaal tend to highlight the moment he decided to boldly walk away from would-be Hollywood tentpoles like Prince of Persia and The Day After Tomorrow to, you know, be an artist. Truth is, the guy’s been making interesting choices from the jump: Donnie Darko, The Good Girl, Brokeback Mountain—three genres, three killer performances. Gyllenhaal, 36, can be goofy—on talk shows, but in conversation, he’s deliberate and serious. Gyllenhaal is at his stirring, emotional best this fall in Stronger, based on the true story of Jeff Bauman, a hero of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing who just wanted to watch his girlfriend cross the finish line when he was caught in the blast.

ELLE: Tell me about your first meeting with Jeff Bauman.

How Jake and Jeff Made A Different Kind of Hero Movie

It’s the kind of game we’ve all played — who’d play you in the movie version of your life? Jeff Bauman got Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s still asked the question a lot these days, as he and the Oscar-nominated actor do press ahead of the release of his biopic “Stronger,” about Bauman’s life in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“We get Aaron Rodgers a lot,” Gyllenhaal answers.

“He can’t act — well, I guess he does the [State Farm] commercials,” Bauman adds.

“Yeah, he’s pretty good,” Gyllenhaal says.

Um, isn’t that quite the leap, an NFL star in 30-second ads to the lead in “Brokeback Mountain” and “Nightcrawler?”

‘Sunday In The Park with George’ Cast Album Now Available

It’s official! The cast recording of the recent, highly acclaimed, sold-out Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George, starring Jake Gyllenhaal in his Broadway debut and Tony-wining actress Annaleigh Ashford, is set for digital download and streaming release September 22nd via the Arts Music division at Warner Music Group, with the CD version to be released in November.

The show, which was widely praised by critics and recouped its investment in just 56 performances, follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and its reverberations both in the present and 100 years into the future. Of Gyllenhaal’s performance, The New York Times’ Ben Brantley declared that “it’s impossible not to fall in love.”
