The 72nd Venice Film Festival will open with Baltasar Kormakur’s survival thriller “Everest,” which chronicles a climbing expedition on Mount Everest that takes a dangerous turn and leaves the adventurers fighting for survival. The film is based on true events that took place in 1996.

“Everest” stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, John Hawkes, Robin Wright and Michael Kelly. It will premiere at the festival out of competition on September 2 at the Palazzo del Cinema. The festival runs from September 2-12.

The film will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures, starting exclusively with a release in IMAX 3D and premium-large format 3D theaters on September 18. “Everest” will launch nationwide on September 25.
