Jake Gyllenhaal has become a fixture at the Toronto International Film Festival. Over the last four years, the actor has appeared there with a series of chameleonlike performances in “Nocturnal Animals,” “Demolition,” “Nightcrawler” and “Prisoners.” This week, he heads back to Canada with “Stronger,” the story of real-life Boston Marathon survivor Jeff Bauman.

“Stronger” is a harrowing showcase for Gyllenhaal, playing a 27-year-old man who loses both his legs in the 2013 bombing on Boylston Street. The movie, which opens in theaters on Sept. 22 through Roadside Attractions, signals a behind-the-scenes transformation for Gyllenhaal. It’s the first project that he has produced through his Manhattan-based company Nine Stories (named after the 1953 collection of prose by J.D. Salinger), which he launched two years ago with veteran producer Riva Marker.

It’s difficult to get through the trailer for Stronger — the real-life story of Jeff Bauman, who became a double amputee following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing — without being brought to tears. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bauman on screen and the movie’s poster, debuting on ET, shows him mid-physical therapy with the tagline, “Strength Defines Us.”

Director David Gordon Green tells ET that his film is more than just a tearjerker, though. “You’re in for a ride,” he said by phone. “That certainly expresses a side of the emotional intensity of the movie, but you might be surprised to find a sense of humor woven in there as well. Expect a few chuckles alongside a tear or two.”

ET: The movies you are perhaps most known for — Pineapple Express, Your Highness — are a very specific type of comedy. You have directed dramas before, but this still feels quite different. What made you want to direct this? And what made you feel you were the right choice to do it?

Filmschoolrejects.com spoke with ‘Okja’ director Bong Joon-ho, and actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton, back in May following the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Here is their conversation:

Tilda, what was it about your experience working on Snowpiercer that made you want to work with Bong Joon-ho again so soon?

Tilda Swinton: I’ll be with Bong ’till the end. He’s now one of my favorite playmates, and anything that he comes up with, I’ll rock and roll with him. I met him in Cannes a few years ago when I was here with We Need To Talk About Kevin and he was on a jury. We had breakfast in a hotel and we became friends. That was it.

How much of your character’s appearance came from you and how much of it came from Bong?

TS: That’s an interesting question because it’s almost impossible to answer. It makes it clear to me how collaboratively we work. We just dream it up together.
