TIFF 2014: Jake Gyllenhaal Lauds ‘Warm’ Canadians

When Jake Gyllenhaal steals into Toronto under the cover of darkness, he knows he’s always going to find one thing waiting for him: a good night’s rest.

“I really love sleeping here,” says Gyllenhaal, in Toronto for the world premiere of Nightcrawler, about an obsessive freelance crime videographer who dives too deep into the nocturnal underbelly of Los Angeles.

It could be our nation’s new slogan: Welcome to Canada! Have a nap! But it’s not like Canadians are dull, says Gyllenhaal. It’s just that whenever he comes here from his home in NYC, he immediately feels at ease.

“There’s a really warm nature to the people here, and to the city,” he says. “Whenever I’ve worked here, whenever I’ve stayed here, it just feels kind of warm, you know?”

‘Nightcrawler’: A Different Look At Gyllenhaal and L.A.
5 September, 2014 Author: Catagories: Interviews, Nightcrawler

The pulsating shimmer of Los Angeles at night can seem either like a dreamscape fantasia or a topography of nightmares. In the new film “Nightcrawler” it is both, a land of opportunity and madness and left in some measure for the viewer to unravel.

The directing debut for Dan Gilroy, who also wrote the screenplay, the film enters the world of nighttime crime-scene videographers as a jumping-off point to explore contemporary media culture, self-created personalities in the Internet age and the boundaries of personal ambition. The film has its world premiere as part of the current Toronto International Film Festival, will have its U.S. premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and open in theaters on Oct. 31.

Jake On Losing 30 Pounds and Himself in ‘Nightcrawler’
2 September, 2014 Author: Catagories: Gallery Updates, Interviews, Nightcrawler

Jake Gyllenhaal has a razor-thin scar on the palm of his hand. It’s a permanent souvenir from the set of “Nightcrawler,” the Toronto Film Festival thriller, in which the actor plays a twisted crime paparazzo. On the Los Angeles shoot last fall, director Dan Gilroy was filming Gyllenhaal simmering alone in a house after his character, Lou, suffers a professional setback. “We were in the middle of a scene with a mirror,” Gyllenhaal recalls on a recent afternoon. “I hit the mirror.” The violent act wasn’t in the script, and Gyllenhaal still isn’t sure what propelled him to do it. “It was just a choice in that moment that happened,” says Gyllenhaal, who accidentally sliced open his hand on a shard of glass.

Doctors at Cedars-Sinai eventually stopped the bleeding and stitched him up, and Gyllenhaal returned to work eight hours later, with his wrist wrapped in gauze. “He’s a total trouper,” Gilroy says.

Director Antoine Fuqua Talks Jake Gyllenhaal & ‘Southpaw’
17 August, 2014 Author: Catagories: Interviews, Southpaw

Jake Gyllenhaal is ripped and rough looking.

This is not the perfectly groomed, model-handsome actor from “Love & Other Drugs” but one molded and muscled from months in the gym, training long before production started in June on “Southpaw” in Western Pennsylvania. Director Antoine Fuqua wanted him to convincingly play a light heavyweight boxer. A sneak peek at a smartphone photo shows Mr. Gyllenhaal has transformed himself.

The hair is short. The blood and ink are fake. But the abs are real and impressive. Very.

“He looks like a fighter. He’s got tattoos. He’s got everything. He’s got the eyes kind of messed up, the nose is different. Oh, yeah, he looks rough. He looks tough,” Mr. Fuqua, a Pittsburgh native, said recently over coffee in the lobby of the Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel, Downtown.
