Jake Gyllenhaal was sent to the emergency room after punching a mirror on the Los Angeles set of his new film Nightcrawler Wednesday morning. But was it an outburst or just an intense moment in character?

“Jake flipped out,” a Nightcrawler source tells PEOPLE. “His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital.”

And while a source close to Gyllenhaal, 32, confirms the actor received stitches in the emergency room, the source claims the reason for the incident was nothing more than a moment in character during an intense scene after an 18-hour day.

Fresh off an acclaimed performance in the thriller “Prisoners,” Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the boxing drama “Southpaw,” which Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) is directing for the Weinstein Company, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Eminem was once attached to star in the movie, which serves as proof that Hollywood can’t keep a good project down.

A fighter of a film, “Southpaw” was originally sold as a pitch to DreamWorks. The studio hired “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter to write the script. When DreamWorks tapped out, MGM swooped in planning to distribute through Sony, though the film was eventually put into turnaround, which is where the Weinstein Company rescued it.

PBS SoCaL and the Hollywood Reporter present The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables series, which features Hollywood’s leading Academy Award-contender stars and talent in intimate discussions. Moderated by the Hollywood Reporter’s Matthew Belloni and Stephan Galloway, each Roundtable will feature six Oscar contenders, representing the top talent and performances of the year in their field.

The five-part series will begin with an Actors roundtable and will be followed by the Directors roundtable, the Actresses roundtable, the Writers roundtable and the Producers roundtable. Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen, Forest Whitaker and Jake Gyllenhaal are among the A-list stars slated to appear.

Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the most highly regarded young stars in Hollywood, will receive the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award at the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards on Oct. 21 at the Beverly Hilton, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Previous recipients of the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award include Geoffrey Rush (2003), Matthew Broderick (2005), Ben Affleck (2007), John Travolta (2008), Christoph Waltz (2009), Sam Rockwell (2010), Christopher Plummer (2011) and Robert De Niro (2012).

Gyllenhaal, 32, has amassed a filmography that is striking in its depth and variety, starting with his big-screen debut at age 10 in City Slickers (1991).
