Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama Southpaw will get its world premiere in Italy, opening the 13th edition of the Ischia Global Film and Music Fest on July 12.

After tragedy brings down the world’s reigning light heavyweight boxing champion, Billy “The Great” Hope, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, must rebuild his life and his career with the help an unlikely rescuer, Forest Whitaker. The film also stars Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora, 50 Cent, and Naomie Harrris.

Sons of Anarchy scribe Kurt Sutter penned the script. Southpaw opens in the US on July 24.

The Ischia Global Film and Music Fest runs from July 12-19.

The first photo that the world saw of Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw (out July 24) made the actor look like an entirely different person than the man last seen as a rail-thin psychopath in Nightcrawler. Bruises had replaced the dark circles on the Golden Globe nominee’s face, and every other inch of him was tatted, ripped, and muscular. This wasn’t Lou Bloom. This was light heavyweight champion Billy Hope.

That’s why it was so shocking to hear that Gyllenhaal only gained an additional 10 pounds for the boxing role. “I was just in a different kind of shape,” Gyllenhaal says, putting it mildly.

Gyllenhaal’s journey to authentic light heavyweight status began five months before cameras started to roll, when director Antoine Fuqua offered him the role. Known for his commitment to his characters, especially when it comes to the physical aspect, Gyllenhaal knew that there was only one way to convince himself and the audience.

Deadline.com has revealed the first image of Jake Gyllenhaal in the Antoine Fuqua-directed Kurt Sutter-scripted ‘Southpaw’. In the film, Jake plays Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope, a lefty champ who loses everything in a personal tragedy and is forced to fight his way to redemption.
