Serious Jake Gyllenhaal lightens up

He has a reputation as an actor who is so intense on set that he’s been involved in some legendary bust-ups with co-stars. But now, after being involved in serious movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead, Jake Gyllenhaal gets to have some fun in his new film Prince Of Persia, out today.

The videogame turned $150m movie sees Jake, 29, playing Prince Dastan in a swashbuckling medieval romp. He joins forces with former Bond girl Gemma Arterton‘s ultra-sexy high priestess Tamina to prevent a magical dagger from falling into the wrong hands.

“It was my childhood dream to do a big action movie – I always wanted to be Indiana Jones,” Gyllenhaal recalls.

“It was also time for me to stop taking myself so seriously. I had done some very heavy dramas and I was looking for something different. When Prince came along, I jumped at the chance.

“I wanted to play it with an Errol Flynn kind of sensibility, and one of the reasons I did the film was that it had a lot of humour in the Indiana Jones style.”

Shot over three months last summer in Morocco, the cast and crew sweltered in 120ºF heat. And to get ready for the role, Jake trained for seven months so he could have the rippling torso.

“I’ve always been very athletic and I loved being able to train hard and work on my physique,” he says. “You see your body transforming and feel yourself becoming the character.

“I also wanted to be in the kind of shape where I felt confident doing as much of the stunt work as possible. It would have been impossible to make this movie without my being able to the stunts. Luckily, I managed to pull that off without getting too badly hurt.

“I had a few injuries – mainly pulled shoulders and a twisted ankle. The worst thing that happened on set was when I accidently hit another actor in the face during a fight sequence. I felt terrible.”

Jake’s reputation for getting into
serious arguments with other actors started on the set of the 2005 film
Jarhead. There, he had a furious bust up with co-star Peter Saarsgard, who also happens to be his brother-in-law.

“Movies can be a very intense process and sometimes there are going to be confrontations depending on the circumstances,” says Jake.

“I know most people talk about what happened on Jarhead, and even though Peter and I didn’t speak for a few weeks after one really bad argument, we became even better friends afterwards. Which is good, since he’s married to my sister Maggie!

“The film was a very tough shoot about guys who are being trained to kill in the Gulf War. We were all going a little out of our minds on that set which probably elevated our performances to where they needed to be for the film.

“With Peter, we were doing a scene where he gets slammed to the ground by me and some other guys.

“We did several takes and Peter was getting hurt. At one point we both just exploded. But a lot of it was just tension building up on the set and I was probably overdoing it in terms of playing my character.”

Jake also had a big row with the late Heath Ledger, his co-star in the emotional drama Brokeback Mountain.

“Heath and I had different ways of working,” he explains. “I was trying to apply things I had seen other actors do – like where you interrupt the other actor to change the dynamic of the scene.

“Heath got pretty irritated with me and we had some arguments about that. Then
we found a way of working together that was much more comfortable. Maybe I helped him in some way – but now, of course, it’s impossible to know.”

Currently, though, it’s all about Prince Of Persia for Jake – plus the upcoming World Cup. Rarely, for an American, he loves the beautiful game.

“Soccer is my other obsession in life,” he grins, “and I’m looking forward to going to South Africa and watching some matches.

“I think the American team is very strong and we can do well.”

Jake Gyllenhaal says he’s proud of that beautiful body of his – and we can hardly blame him.

Hunky Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal, who has us swooning over him on a daily basis, admits he’s put a helluva lot of work into achieving THAT physique for his latest film Prince of Persia.

He said: “I got into shape by doing acrobatics.

“I also did a lot of horse riding and when it was time to the shoot there were daily workouts and I’d run back from the set to the hotel when we were in Morocco.”

Asked if he was proud of his body, he added: “Yes, I’m very proud.”
And just when we thought we couldn’t get more excited for a film than for the Prince of Persia, the cheeky batchelor tempted us with another of his creations.
He added: “If you think I’m naked in this movie, you should the movie I did with Ed Zwick, Love And Other Drugs. You’ll just have to come back for that one.”

Prince of Hollywood finds time is on his side

Jake Gyllenhaal breezes into the room and pulls up a chair. He makes a quip about the wooden furnishings in our surroundings and, as he takes his seat, exudes the air of a man who is very contented with his lot. And why wouldn’t he be? At 29, the Californian has already shown an enduring quality in his work, from his breakout role in Donnie Darko, through big-budget thrillers such as Rendition and smaller, critically acclaimed films such as Jarhead and Brothers.

Then there is Brokeback Mountain, the film which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor and cemented his reputation of serious credibility. Now he’s become an action hero, playing the lead in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Jerry Bruckheimer‘s adaptation of the bestselling video game.

Gyllenhaal also appears to have resolved something within himself. Often said to be a somewhat reticent interviewee, today he is open and engaging, humorous and genuine. He talks repeatedly in his soft voice about how he no longer takes himself quite so seriously and how he has learned to embrace the various facets of his career and the life he leads around that.

Long touted to become one of the actors of his generation, someone who will remain at the forefront of the industry when all the other fly-by-night teen heartthrobs have added “Don’t you know who I am?” to their most-used phrases, Gyllenhaal has earned widespread praise.

Jim Sheridan, who directed him in Brothers, compares him to Warren Beatty. Ben Kingsley says he is the classic American film actor, while Four Weddings and a Funeral director Mike Newell, who worked with Gyllenhaal on Prince of Persia, believes that the Californian has the versatility to become one of the greats.

“Jake has this wonderful thing where he can appear in any kind of movie,” Newell says. “Now he’s proved that he can be a star in this kind of movie, and we know he can give a smaller more interior performance. He is very multi-faceted and multi-talented.”

Prince of Persia is certainly a new avenue for Gyllenhaal. Once Bruckheimer decided he wanted him as the lead there wasn’t much of a decision to make. “He’s the king of Hollywood and he decided he wanted me to be the Prince of Persia. It was quite flattering.

Jake Gyllenhaal takes humorous approach to life, career

I love my work and care about it,” Jake Gyllenhaal said in this recent interview. “But I’m beginning to have a great sense of humor about it because I just don’t feel like there’s any need to take it all that seriously.”

With that declaration, Jake proceeded to give mostly tongue-in-cheek answers to questions. The actor’s jesting mood also stemmed from the movie he was promoting, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” After all, when you’re talking about a movie that was adapted from a video game, you can’t be all that serious. But the film, directed by Mike Newell (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, will probably make tons of money.

Jake said he made “Prince of Persia,” which co-stars Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina, so moviegoers will “have a good time…This movie awakened that kid in me again. I made it for families. My aunt called me the other day and she was like, ‘Hey, this is a movie that your cousins can finally see.”
